City of Raleigh Getting Powered by Suniva
February 9, 2012
Norcross, Ga. -- Suniva, Inc., a U.S. manufacturer of high-efficiency crystalline silicon solar cells and modules, today announced that the 500 kilowatt (kW) rooftop solar array at the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, North Carolina will be Powered by Suniva™. The company also announced that its solar modules are powering an electric vehicle (EV) charging station located next door to the convention center.
In response to the City of Raleigh’s request for renewable energy proposals, solar engineer and developer, FLS Energy partnered with electrical contractor, PowerWorks to bring solar power to the Raleigh Convention Center using Suniva solar modules.
"PowerWorks is excited to be involved in the development and installation of such an iconic solar project,” said Al Fiore, CEO of PowerWorks. “The partnership between PowerWorks, FLS Energy and Suniva has assured that the City of Raleigh and the Raleigh Convention Center will enjoy one of the highest-quality photovoltaic systems in the country."
Scheduled for completion in April 2012, the rooftop solar array will consist of approximately 2,080 Suniva modules, covering 50 percent of the rooftop. This makes the Raleigh Convention solar array the second-largest convention center photovoltaic installation in the United States. “The Raleigh Convention Center solar array is a landmark project. It is more evidence that the solar age is dawning,” said Michael Shore, CEO of FLS Energy.
The use of Suniva’s U.S.-sourced, high-efficiency solar modules, as well as other regionally manufactured products, helped the joint FLS Energy and PowerWorks proposal win the bid. The array is projected to reduce Raleigh’s energy use by as much as 725,000 kWh annually, the equivalent of removing 500 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere.
“Suniva is pleased to partner with PowerWorks and FLS Energy in the commissioning of the convention center solar array. This will support the renewable energy demands of the City of Raleigh for years to come,” said Bryan Ashley, chief marketing officer for Suniva, Inc. “We’re proud to see our Georgia technology help propel our enlightened neighbors in North Carolina toward a more sustainable future.”
